Metastatic breast cancer (also called stage iv) is breast cancer that has spread to another part of the body, most commonly the liver, brain, bones, or lungs. Metastatic breast cancer (stage iv breast cancer) is an advanced form of breast cancer that occurs when breast cancer cells spread from the drugs used to treat breast cancer, metastatic. This may include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or some combination of these.

Metastatic breast cancer, also referred to as metastases, advanced breast cancer, secondary tumors, secondaries or stage iv breast cancer, is a stage of breast cancer where the breast cancer cells have spread to distant sites beyond the axillary lymph nodes. Common sites for it to spread are the bones, brain, liver and lungs. Breast cancer treatment commonly includes various combinations of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Although metastatic breast cancer can be treated for a time, there isn't a cure.
